Posted By Crim I'm surprised this has not been posted already. This was reported on yesterday's national radio news and I wonder why? Is it because Principal Contractors just do not have enough knowledge of current regulations, or do they think they can just get "away with it"? There are so many regulations right now that it would not be surprising to learn that they are unable to digest them all. HASWA 74, Management Regs. Workplace Regs. PPE Regs, CDM 07, Asbestos Regs, Noise at work regs. Work at height regs. PUWER. RR (Fire Safety) Order. COSHH regs. Manual Handling Regs. First Aid at work. All relevant to construction/refurbishment. Have I missed any, I wouldn't be surprised if I have?

Posted By Dave Merchant 1 - It's a campaign. 2 - Campaigns only work when they make the news. 3 - Look hard enough and you can always find something wrong on a construction site. Of course I wouldn't suggest that the above three points are in any way connected to each other...

Posted By db The campaign was aimed at refurb jobs with emphasis on falls from heights and slips and trips. A site has to be pretty bad before HSE issue a notice on housekeeping. Sites are very rarely "shut down" - that is just a headline grabber (not by HSE but by the press office probably). So notices were issued on a third of sites - I would suggest they wouldn't have to look very hard to find issues with falls from height or poor housekeeping.

Posted By Dave Merchant ...and if you read my summary of the IP/IN stats for work at height you'll know there's an "issue" with the way they're being used...

Posted By CFT 395 IP's issued with 30% of sites being visited ordered to cease work just ain't great! With a 40% positive result (let's be fair that reads 'negative result) out of all sites visited is pretty poor; having so said, visiting a site yesterday of a company that has recently won a coveted H&S award had so many things being done incorrectly, one wonders just who inspected them in the first place. Had they announced the 1000 visits I suspect (sadly) that the results in terms of 21's and 22's would have been very different; which comes down to reasons why exactly we are employed to do our job and the support one receives in discharging those duties.
