Posted By Brando Any one else come across this one with metal halid lights: Fire alarm sounds Emergency lights come on. Power is cut to site and back up generator kicks in. Surge from generator causes lights to go off ( still don't understand exactly why ). Lights then take up to 10 mins to cool down and come on again!! The wrong type of lighting me thinks for this application? Brando

Posted By holmezy Brando, me agrees. Definately not the right sort of lights. From your description, do the emergency lights come on when the power is cut and before they generator kicks in, or are they reliant on the generator kicking in, at which time they will be cooling down anyway? Either way, they're not sufficient to be emergency lights. Holmezy

Posted By Brando The lights come on immediatly. But if the power is cut the generator kicks in after about thirty seconds and the lights go off. So - you have 30 seconds to find your way out between coming on and the generator kicking in. Brando

Posted By Mitch Brando, Go for self charging, battery powered lights or a UPS power supply while genny kicks in, 30 seconds seems a long time!

Posted By MP Grayson Are you sure its the lights cooling down and not some strange timer thingy-bob built into the generator buzz system prevent a surge (power spike) from the genny or prioritise power distribution from the genny? If it is the lights, they sound like the old sodium's that were all the rage in the 70's. Cracking system though!
