Posted By Russil Kumar For the Past 13yrs. I am into Heavy Civil Construction Safety. I have seen professionals (Including Safety) not knowing anything about Head Protection, Head, one of the most important part of the body, the Human Command Centre. I was even challenged by some when I told them that the red helmets should not be used for more than a year, even if the manufacturer says that it could be used for two years. (I am talking about using the red helmets in the middle east with severe exposure to direct sunlight). How seriously do we all think about Head head protection? Questions - 1. Does the cost of a helmet determine the protection that it will give? 2. Does the colour really Matter? 3. Do I need to use a six suspension helmet inserts or a four will do? 4. The vertical clearance between the 'Helmet Shell' & the 'suspension Harness' is it a place to store stuffs like a safety glass, hand gloves or something else. 5. 'X' person says, I got the helmet issued tome two years ago, I kept it in my house never used it, so what is the harm? 6. Do you really know how to inspect the helmets that has been issued to you? 7. Are you aware what class of helmet should a person wear who works in a construction site? 8. Does the helmet used by a factory worker and a construction worker vary? 9. Are bump caps suitable to be used on a construction site? There are many more questions that all may have. But ask these basic questions to yourself and see whether you have the answers. Good Day Russil Kumar

Posted By Tabs 1. Does the cost of a helmet determine the protection that it will give? No, it will be the design that does that. You might pay more for a better design - but not always. 2. Does the colour really Matter? It does to some people - it is used as a way of identifying roles. There may be some colours which are better for reflecting light and heat, and some that might degrade quicker in UV. 3. Do I need to use a six suspension helmet inserts or a four will do? Depends on design and use. If six are provided, all six must be used. 4. The vertical clearance between the 'Helmet Shell' & the 'suspension Harness' is it a place to store stuffs like a safety glass, hand gloves or something else. Bad practice as it will certainly interfere with the designed function during potential compression and absorption of impact force. 5. 'X' person says, I got the helmet issued tome two years ago, I kept it in my house never used it, so what is the harm? Plastics degrade depending on time and environment. Do not trust a hat beyond its date. 6. Do you really know how to inspect the helmets that has been issued to you? Visual inspection? Yes, I hope so. 7. Are you aware what class of helmet should a person wear who works in a construction site? No. - I don't do construction. 8. Does the helmet used by a factory worker and a construction worker vary? Well they shouldn't share (wink) ... possibly, but as I said above, I don't do construction. 9. Are bump caps suitable to be used on a construction site? Yes where the risks are head bumping, and not falling items. So probably after / during second fix ... but probably not during construction / first fix. Am I close? What is the prize? (I already have a hard hat, but a holiday would be nice).

Posted By Paul Cornet 2. Does the colour really Matter? It does if your working in the vicinity of a railway, RED and GREEN helmets are not allowed!

Posted By TBC Looking at the email address of Russil - this comes from the Arab Emirates and the question is probably looking for other professionals to give answers that will ensure some argument against the purchase of the cheapest items.
