Hello,

Does anybody have an opinion as to whether leg protection is recommended when using hedge cutters. If so, what type would you suggest?

I have looked thoroughly for any form of guidance to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi
The big company I used to work for had it in the risk assessment as necessary, which I believe it used to be up to the individual grounds person.
They all had to wear the gortex type trousers to offer some protection.
When I had to review the risk assessment I found no reason for the use of leg protectors as they would hinder the worker more than anything, and we looked into the other control measures such as the equipment used and trained staff etc....
Not sure if I have been much help, I do have a risk assessment on hedge cutting if you want to have a look at the control measures?

Regards
Naomi

We use chainsaw type leggings, hard hat, eye and face protection, gloves, ear protection, safety boots. A combination helmet would suit...

i agree with Naomi. we had the same problem with restricted workspace and also staff took more risks when wearing the protective leggings.
we did an inspection of those staff who did wear protective leggings and there were more signs of snagging than anyone else who just wore normal overalls.
