Posted By Mark Ellis Hi all, after some problems I have finally renewed my CSCS card, I originally had a gold card but have become Tech IOSH within the last two years so sent of my copies of certificates etc. I also took the management CSCS safety test, no problem. I received a red "trainee" card? when I queried this I was advised this was the only card available to me as I was recently qualified! regardless of any other qualifications and 25+ years experience. I was advised the only way to obtain a red card was to re-apply and not disclose my Tech IOSH status. This I have now done, is this common? Mark.

Posted By RP Amazing is'nt it. My card expires next month, but I will spend the money of a couple of H&S books. There should be a way of removing a card from thoese who ignore safety rules...

Posted By Kevin dilworth I would like to know also if a person can have their card taken from them, as many workers in my place constantly disregard safety everyday ie: standing on the very top of there step ladders etc

Posted By Robert K Lewis Rp and Kevin CSCS has nopthing to do with safety only really Trade skills so why expect CSCS holders to behave safely. Safety competence is not derived from CSCS and one can but hope the industry will come to realise this. Bob

Posted By Lloyd Cole Hi all, the cscs card is a construction workers safety entry card, all construction companies expect this from all workers who enter a site to work on it whatever the trade. They now have to show this at the begining of induction. The only exceptions to this rule are for safety supervisors/officers/managers who are included on, or work for, the principal contractor who oversee safety compliance. If a person holds an iosh level certificate backed by a nebosh qualification and works in the construction industry, enters a building site to work on it,in a reqognised trade, you will need a cscs....at any level.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Lloyd Why? The cscs card was designed as a certification of trade skills to NVQ level 2 the H&S element is a johnny come lately to the feast. Some contractors and latterly clients and CDMCs, formerley PSs, have seen the cscs as a magic bullett proclaiming competence. It has not, does not and will never do this. No matter how many climb on board the bandwagon this will not change what is essentially a very very basic test of some H&S knowledge. Bob

Posted By Mark Eden Bob I act as a CDMC and I don't consider the CSCS scheme to be anything more than a money cow. £45 for a test is high way robbery. Look back on CSCS threads on this forum and see what others have to say. For all its faults, it is a starting point for site safety, but by no means the answer, like wise a 30 minute induction from the PC on Do's and Don'ts. We need to look at occupational behavior and devise a short compulsory training package to this end for all site operatives, then we may a significant drop in site injuries.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Mark As a CDMC myself periodically then I am defintely not accusing all but there are some. I have absolutely no problems when people recognise the card as purely initial basic information training but anything beyond that is a definite no no for me. Yes we do need to establish some form of structured programme for operatives and others - CPD in safety if you wish. Buit the round of re-certifications to the same material and syllabus is not the way to go. Problem for the training bodies is that this means ongoing development of programmes. Bob

Posted By Robert K Lewis Maybe this is where IOSH can find a role, together with the national training bodies and groups. Without structured H&S development, and I do not mean force feeding of legislation and specific information, we are not going to achieve change. Bob
