I desperately need a benchmark figure for the construction industrys AFR.

At the moment I am comparing our AFR to other construction companies, but I am being hassled to get a benchmark figure for the construction industry as a whole.

I know the HSE don’t do a benchmark for AFR - does anyone know where I might be able to find one though.

Thanks

Lucy

Have you tried the CITB or British Safety Council?

HSE does publish statistical figures for annual fatal injury statistics - the latest statistics are for 2005/6, and you can see the analysis for construction workers in their report (copyright free):

http://www.hse.gov.uk/st...ics/overall/fatl0506.pdf

HSE also analyses accidents - see: http://www.hse.gov.uk/st...ndustry/construction.htm
and gives RIDDOR's statistics
http://www.hse.gov.uk/st...try/construction-ld1.htm

hope this helps

Hi Lucy.

The stats on the HSE website [inclusive of AFRs] reflect underreporting or RIDDOR events, estimated as some 50% for the employed and over 95% for the self-employed, so if you wanted an industry wide comparator you should probably take account of underreporting.

However, not sure why your company wants to benchmark against the industry as a whole.

We know that the REPORTED accident rates on small projects are much higher than on big projects - reasonable to assume that if it were not for underreporting that the divergence would be even greater.

Surely, if you want to set "SMART" targets, you should be benchmarking against the better end of the industry, e.g. using MCG statistics as a starting point.

See

Do the MCG just use AIR rather than AFR?

I am new to all this and have no real experience so sorry if I appear a little slow when it comes to all this!

Many thanks
