just had a bit of a prank go wrong, badly so and unsure of what action to take.
one of the people in the office switched monitor cables between two people, when they discovered one was fixing the problem when they got an electric shock and hit their head on a metal support under the desk. The cut was pretty deep and as with all head injuries there was a lot of blood, the injured person has gone to hospital now, probably need a few stiches.
the problem now is no one knows who has done this to all the computers in the office and no one will own up. i'm just back from meeting the manager and he seems to be of the opinion that its a chinese guy who works in the office and wants me to give him a written warning, he never gave any reason why he suspects the guy maybe he saw him do it but i think he just doesnt like the guy (he has made racist jokes in the past but thats all they've been nothing major) and has been giving him a hard time since he arrived in terms of workload etc., there could be a very good reason why he thinks he did it, maybe he saw him. but i dont think i can give him a warning until i have proof, the manager is furious so i'm wasting time till things cool down so i can investigate things properly then.
can i just go home now and ignore the whole thing!! its bad enough we'll have to report the injury, it'll be our first in over 18 months.

With regard to the warning, that is an HR issue and should be dealt with by them. Any disciplinary action would obviously have to be backed up by firm evidence not supposition or prejudice. Regarding the prank, I would brief all those employed as to the dangers of horseplay (especially involving electrical items) and the obvious consequences.

I really don't feel the open forums are the place to discuss this one.
Just my opinion.

"he has made racist jokes in the past but thats all they've been nothing major" they may not seem major but how does the employee on the recieving end of this view the comments?
The manager wants you to issue a written warning, what proof does he have?
My gut instinct sounds like this is being used as a reason to harass / bully the employee involved.
At the risk of coming across as really cynical I wouldn't be surprised if this was a put up job by the manager to instigate a written warning (unfortunately I have seen this at another company).
I think that you're quite right to report this and let things cool a bit, it might be worth haviing a chat with the manager once he's cooled down and find out why he is so adamant that it is this employee.
Good luck.

Taking it for granted that the thread isn't an April fool itself........!
I'm shocked that we seem to be missing the point here! Switching cables between two monitors shouldn't really cause an electric shock should it? Power leads, and connection leads to monitors are mostly universal.
You should spend your time positively, looking into why an electric shock happened as opposed to charging the employee with anything. Seems to me that currently you may have some wiring / electrical problems that require sorting.

P.S. Sorry for puns

How did the electric shock occur? When was the equipment last PAT tested?

ah Ian_P
ya got me!
i tried my best to get a few choice subjects into it, pranks, electric shock, head injury, not wanting to report accidents, bullying, harassemnt, and a sprinkling of racism always stirs opinion!! though i had never really thought of the cross reference with H&R never came to mind for me!
thanks for the replys though, i feel kind of bad now. apologies to all.
I hope it doesnt turn out to be a case of the boy who cried wolf!!!

There is a very good chance that more than one person was behind the prank or others are aware of who was responsable. It may be a good idea to let the person(s) responsable know that there may be a form of collective punishment for all if the person(s) involved do not own up, peer presure is the best way to get someone to own up. Also if they own up then make it known that the punishment will be less severe than if you have to conduct and a time consuming investigation.
