Posted By Chris Mac Guys, A brief insight - Our fire system is being upgraded from an older system to a more modern system. Whilst this is on-going we have a section of site that has an alarm sounder that is not sounding on an intermittent alarms, plus they cannot hear the intermittent alarm from elsewhere due to their location. After ongoing requests I was told that it had been sorted, only to do a test and the sounder in their area to go to full evacuation (continous alarm) while the rest of site was in intermittent. I have been told in some cases the continous alarm doesnt go off, leaving them with no alarm at all...a more serious matter I am sure, without playing down the severity of my initial problem. Can anyone provide me with some information on where the company stands when in this situation. Basically I feel I am going to have to go higher up the chain to get some backing. To do this I need some ammo stating why this can't continue, apart from the bleeding obvious! This ongoing work has been 'on-going' for 2 months now and in my opinion is not on. Hopefully this will give the issue some more 'umph' and make sure that the problem is rectified before any other work is carried out. Opinions and thoughts please.

Posted By garyh There is no legal requirement to have a particular method of raising the alarm in the event of fire, I believe. Your risk assessment should consider this. I once installed a fire alarm on some cabins - a hand turned bell. Nothing wrong with that, for two large ground floor cabins. Basically though, if you take the time, money and effort to install something, then it should work properly (doh!) However, if a short term problem exists, you have to manage the situation, and review your RA accordingly. A couple of links which may help:- http://www.thefpa.co.uk/...der+Guidance+Leaflet.htm http://www.bsi-global.co.../?pid=000000000030168176
