Posted By SJR In our ladies toilets at work, we have 'Sanfire' sanitary incinerators - quite old I guess. They are still used, but the question has been asked about maintenance requirements and who is responsible for emptying the ash and how the ash be disposed of. It has also been suggested that we shouldn't be using these at all, although you can still buy them (albeit a more modern version!) Can anyone shed any light on this matter?

Posted By Robert K Lewis I am not even sure that these are absolutely legal now - stand to be corrected though. They are a waste disposal process, and very hygienic too. The problem is that the legislative changes in the 90s may have caused these to require some form of licensing. Talk to the manufacturers if you can otherwise make some changes.

There is also the fire safety element to consider under your risk assessment.
I was involved in an incident where the ash was removed from the tray at the bottom, but the tray was not put back. The incinerator was positioned over a plastic bin full of semi-dry paper towels!
The inevitable fire destroyed the toilet block & nearly a whole warehouse full of cookers & fires!

Posted By sarah crawley Hi Just a thought but these old sanitary incinerators are normally full of asbestos-containing materials - I used to be an asbestos surveyor and often found rope and board! Not nice to be disturbed on a regular basis - we always recommended removal. Plastic bins with the automatic sensors are much more pleasant to use!
