I still see them around but who knows when they were manufactured. They were certainly being manufactured in 2003 to my knowledge.

Thanks Bob
Since iv'e chatted to Garry,i am getting interested in the torque scenario,as you know a std double coupler is encompassing the tube, with a divider between, tube on tube, there is 2 fittings to be tightened at the required torque setting, to prevent, horizontal, and, vertical movement, each bolt needs to be serviceable in order to carry out it's function.however, band and plate's rely on tube on tube pressure, and comprises of 1 major tightening agent (not including the thumbscrew, when they have them).
i would be very interested in any views, regarding band and plates.
regards

The real problem with band and plate is that one axis is load bearing and the other is not. I have seen many "experienced" scaffoldes use them "on the flat" which is not load bearing particularly when erecting fans. Nasty when it starts to slip!

Hi Paddy
The Band and Plate is still alive and kicking, although it has not been manufactured in the U.K for some time it is still considered a quality Scaffold Coupler and is used through out the World.
Like all Scaffolding Couplers it has its good and not so good points, this depends on the application. At first inspection one would be forgiven to assume that the B+P is a combersum and milti faceted piece of kit consisting of five associated parts...Band, Plate, Screw, Thumb Screw and last but not least the chair.
This is a very versatile Loud Bearing Coupler, I have used it too splice Tube and Ladder Beams, allied with a butt it can be used as a substantial cheque Coupler, it can be used as a positional coupler i.e Transoms to ledgers not only dose it keep the working platform level it gives the Scaffold added strength ( a put log coupler ...single is non-load bearing)in that it mitigates against the Structure from opening up i.e. Building Facade...
Fraternal regards, Garry...

Sorry Bob, but I must leap to the defence of my Brother Scaffolders.
"Experienced Scaffolders" use Band and Plate "on the Flat" because they are Experienced.
I started with S.G.B. in 1972, so I cut my teeth on Band and Plate ...as it were.
I was taught that the Band and Plate was designed to be applied either way i.e. that the 6.2. Kn slip test in accordance with B.S.1139 Part 2 1982 with the band vertical or horizontal "on the Flat".
I did not want to mention it in my previous post to Paddy, I was waiting for confirmation from an Associate within the S.G.B. Organization.
Best regards, Garry...

Garry
But many experienced scaffolders treat them as equally load bearing in both planes which they are not. SGB erectors managed to erect a complete fan in this manner some years ago.
