Posted By Paul Hi All. Could anyone please help clarify what width of walkways should be in the workplace? Part M (para 3.14 b) of BR recommends it should have an unobstructed width of at least 1200mm, Part B (para 3.18, table 4) recommends it should be 750, 850 or 1050 depending on the number of residents. Due to changes in the building some walkways will now be just about over 1050. Are we compliant or it must be more than 1200? Many thanks to all who can give any idea about this. Paul

Posted By Stephan From memory is the 1200 width guidance; from the DDA on the width of corridors for wheelchair users, and the other figures are widths of the final exit doors from buildings. Therefore a corridor could be 1200 wide and then narrows down at the exit doorto 750

Posted By Clive Buckley I'm sorry but I think you are wrong. As far as I am aware walkways should not narrow towards fire exits as this can have the effect of funnelling occupants in the event of an evacuation, thus causing a bottleneck at the exit.

Posted By Stephan I did not say the walkway narrowed I WAS REFERRING TO THE ACTUAL WIDTH OF THE DOOR OPENING. YOU WOULD HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE ARCHITRAVING ETC
