I've just finished delivering the training for my first Week 1 Nebosh Certificate. It went quite well, I really enjoyed it and hopefully so did my students!
However, you can't know everything and it isn't until you start to teach other people that you realise just how much you don't.
My request is this - I really struggle with the auditing part. There just doesn't seem much to say, despite the fact that I've read up on it and tried to research it. I don't have any practical experience in this field, you see, so I feel like I'm just talking theory with them. I was very lucky this week, one of my students is an auditor so I asked him to talk to the class about what it involved, the pitfalls etc, but I know I'm not going to be that lucky on every course! I obviously picked up some extra information from him, but does anyone have any advice on how they deliver this part?
I'm also wondering if perhaps I'm just being a little too self-critical about this as it's early days for me.

You must get in touch with Nebosh directly; the students will be counting on you to not only teach them the General Certificate, you will be preparing them for the exams and their initial development in health & Safety. Getting a student to help out is not (IMO) the right way forward ; general auditing is quite different to the requirements of this part of the syllabus for monitoring audit and review.
I do urge you to speak with Nebosh as soon as you can. Sorry to be so direct, I hope you understand my comments are for your own benefit, but mainly for the benefit of the students.

Thanks for your reply, I completely take on board your point. Just to clarify though, (I'm sorry, I didn't make it very clear in my original post) that person who I referred to talked about his role taking part in internal auditing of their health and safety management system. As I said, i should have made that clear.
As regards Nebosh, I have the all the information necessary in writing - it's experience I'd like some advice on. Do you have any?

Just wondering as I didn't do this route does 'audit and review' include visits to construction sites checking paperwork and making recommendations for improvement / advising on missing records?

Hi mags - you could try use a cross checker to assist you. They check both the teaching and any other that needs doing - they are effectively doing an audit.
My only concern is that you seem to be doubting your own ability.
You have the knowledge - as that has been judged by your employers - but you realise that on the auditing you are unsure.
I suggest that you are being a wee bit critical of yourself and need to relax.
Week 1 and job well done. You highlight to students that if they are uncomfortable about what they are doing they approach their line manager??
Follow your own guidance and ask for help.

You are probably trying to over complicate this area; I must assume that you have gained experience in H&S related matters through work of some description?
On this assumption, as you know what is required from a teaching 'by the book' basis, now apply your own experience in whatever industry you were in to this topic, start simple and show the comparisons between sampling, inspection, monitoring, safety tours, and an audit etc, whether that be in-house or the need for an 'outside' specialist, it applies to just about every industry you can think of, even a simple one; it is not also restricted to the 'entire' organisation, it may for example be that you wish to fully audit just one process.
You may like to get hold of HSG 65, not only will it give some good information on auditing and review, it will show how they link up with other safety related areas, plus the fact the students will need to know about 65 anyway.
