Perhaps the government if they do decide to take this further, will come to realise that it is something we would actually like to see. It has only been mooted by us for years.

It would appear that we are the flavour of the week.

Maybe IOSH should be assist us by getting out amongst industry by making employers and the general public aware of who they regard as competent consultants.

How about the IOSH president on the national news?

Will we be the new rogue trader taking over from dodgy builders? Undercover cameras in a set up location.

Act now or suffer later I say.

Not against regulation in theory - but it won't stop people using H&S as an excuse to ban things like Christmas decorations, conkers etc. etc. These decisions are often taken by faceless people to justify an unpopular decision and I can't see regulation stopping this.

Also, the question has still to be answered - how do we regulate? I do not want to restart the old argument, but I am not convinced insisting on CMIOSH is the answer.

Cheers, P.

dont want to get into the whole regulating debate again (i think a government overseen licencing system, though tedious is the only way, where rouge traders etc couldnt operate and mal practice offenders could be struck off)

My main point is that employers have a role in all of this, yet in either story they made it out to as if they had no choice but to get such people in. Employers should check the people who they get in as consultants, sure there are 'rouge traders' out there but if you're an employer there is nothing wrong with asking for experience / qualifications. After all it is the employers duty to provide a safe place of work, so if the person they get in isnt suitable the employer should hold their hand up too.

Please read the DWP House of Commons Select Committee Report--if not the hundreds of pages, then the summary & recommedations--This report is not only about the regulation of the profession, but includes a lot more. As usual, the media is selective.

The summary is at:-

http://www.publications....t/cmworpen/246/24603.htm

Conclusions and recommendations at:-

This should be sweet music to all competent safety professionals.

Trouble is that at the speed of Gov't I shall be not only retired but probably boxed up for disposal before any real change occurs.

I think I found the relevant link on regulating consultants at

http://www.publications....t/cmworpen/246/24607.htm

though with all the "nexts" and "backs" I'm not quite sure where I was.

I did note that a little earlier IOSH was introduced as "the body that represents safety consultants" This I found to be a bit ambiguous as I would have liked to see "qualified" and/or "competent" in there somewhere.
