Posted By A Hayden My friend has been asked to supply a method statement before he can do some work for a Company. He is a one man operation and he supplied risk assessments but they have asked for this method statement as well. Has anyone any advice on how he can prepare this? He has searched his trade association website,NTPA, and rang them, I have searched this web site and we have all searched the HSE website, but we cannot find an example for his line of work. Has anyone an example of this or advice on preparing one? I would be very grateful for any help.

Posted By anon1234 The format/structure for the method statement would be the same as any other method statement - as it merely describes the method to be used/steps that are followed. Not forgetting to iclude issues such as gaining access to site, checking for other activities in the area, implementing appropriate controls, etc, etc, right though to completion of the works and leaving of site (taking all rubbuish etc with you!)

Posted By CFT Pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) start at point A (arrive on site) describe what he will do, how, when what who where etc, include any relevant safety & health information, products and so on,reach point Z (which is pack up and go home)and that is your method statement. It is a way of documenting a procedure (method), and in most cases, it is the safety related content that most (but not all)persons requesting said MS require. Cant help you on the content, your friend would be far more competent than I, at his profession! CFT

Posted By anon1234 CFT, no problems, I alsways think it is useful for those asking the questions to see some consensus of opinion (albeit we don't want 100, 'I agree with the above' comments)

Posted By Glyn Atkinson It is also useful to go through the method statement to understand if anything has been omitted in error - access methods especially - for vents, ductwork external entrances if laying pest control pots of poison down. What is the safeguard if that was done in a school area for example from curious eyes and little hands? Exact locations agreed with the statement provider can stop any misunderstandings or problems later - always worth the effort to "walk the job!"
