I wrote some time ago about heroes in our industry. I was having a conversation with a 60 year old guy today who has been in construction all his life, but suddenly finds that he is in fact "incompetent" as he can not find the time, money or indeed inclination to complete his route to CSCS. He said it never ceases to amaze him how improvements in the construction industry allow such things as abseiling and complex lifts to take place safely, every day of the week. He said a lot of the improvements were due to people such as those that voice their concerns on this forum for helping to make the world a safer place and I told him I was a member of IOSH. He actually asked me to say abig thank you to you all for your commitment to improving standards and he said you were all heroes. In all my years in this game nobody has ever said anything so positive. It has made my day

Tony,

Good to hear we are at times appreciated. I think I'm correct in saying that CSCS cards are not a legal requirement, they go some way to proving competence, (along with reams of other paperwork/certs), so I hope you let him no that he was definitely not 'incompetent'.

I am not so lucky during my SSE's lots of banter but no real accolades for the profession I'm afraid.
