Posted By May Warley Hi all,
At present we have 50 parking lots with 3 allocated for disabled. One of the managers has asked me to check if I can reduce the 3 lots to 1. At the moment we don't have any disabled employees with us. I need help/opinions as I'm not sure what I should do. I have checked with the hse website but couldn't find anything on this, maybe I haven't tried hard enough.
Thanks in advance May

Posted By May Warley Hi all,
Got another question. This manager wants to make the disabled parking spaces as dual purpose - disabled or visitors. This idea doesn't sound right to me. Need opinions, please.
Thanks in advance May

Posted By Mitch You don't have to be disabled to use a disabled parking space, selfish and inconsiderate yes but not disabled. How do you mark a dual use space? It will be used by able bodied people, I assume all 3 and you will end up with no practical disabled provision.

Posted By Scotty Hi May. Less to do with H&S, more to do with disabled access. Agree with posts above. You might also want to try www.lcdisability.orgHas your boss given any reason for the reduction? That you have no disabled employees is not a reason. Reminds me of the branch manager of a local bank, when informed he should consider his disabled customers access i.e. main entrance was up a flight of stairs (on a modern building) replied, 'Why? We don't have any disabled customers'. Keep us posted! Scotty.

Posted By May Warley Her reasons are probably 1) we don't have disabled employee at present and also 2) we don't have disabled customer visiting us yet.

Posted By Philip McAleenan May,
The purpose of making premises, services etc. accessible for people with disabilities is not simply to meet the needs of existing customers etc. but to ensure that there are no barriers to future employees, customers and visitors.

Posted By May Warley Hi All,
Just to keep you guys posted. This manager has sent an email to my boss, the Gen Mgr and I think she is determined to get what she wants. I am waiting fopr my boss to give instructions to me to put up signs for these three parking spaces, for disabled/visitors(both disabled and abled)
I am frustrated now.
Thanks a lot for your posts. May

That may not be such a positive move; the company may have serious reservations over it's business being discussed on a publically accessed forum.
