Posted By Mitch Andy,
Do a search on Google there are some very good 'down draught' benches available for this type of work.

Posted By andy pollard Mitch thanks for response I have looked at draught benches problem i see with these items and our work environment is that a bench will be used for other uses possible leading to damage and not just for removal of excess dust before maintenance of the equipment.

Ran a test yesterday with a downdraught bench for removing carbon dust when aircraft components are ground. Worked excellently. By far the best, and simplest, solution. This unit had a 370W single phase motor which replaced the 3 kW motor in the previous extraction unit (with movable duct and capture hood) which simply was not working. Think of both the improvements in exposure control and the saving in electrical energy!
Re your concern about damage, why not have a simple cover plate that is put in place when the downdraught bench is not in use?

Posted By Mitch Chris,
beat me to it a light weight cover ideal. The only problem I've come across with these benches is the different types of debris for the filters i.e. mixing ferrous and non ferrous metals.
