Posted By Ian N. Good afternoon, I have my own `Crane operations checklist`. I produced it to assist me on the first heavy crane lift that I had overall organisational and H&S responsibility for. It may be useful to you as it will take you from the planning stage, to the operation and finally to close out and reporting procedures to finish. If this sounds like what youre after, let me know how to e-mail it to you (Word doc.)and I'll get it to you straight away. regards, Ian N.

Posted By Eddie Campbell Can you shed a bit more detail on what you need, the industry you are in and the type of cranes being used? Generic crane operation check lists may need to be tweaked to suit the industry and the type of crane. Excavators used for lifting are a special case in themselves.

Posted By JLH70 I work in the Construction Industry (Specifically Wastewater). We tend to use excavators for general lifting and we have lifting procedures etc in place for this. We are seeing more "Deep Shaft" excavations requiring Crane Work (including man riding baskets). We predominantly use Contract Lifts for crane work. We are audited externally but I would like to visit site and go through a basic audit checking chains, slings, lifting plan etc We have crane authorisation forms etc for the site manager to complete when crane arrives on site. Really after a basic question set for LOLER on Construction sites. Thanks, Jason

Posted By John A Wright JLH, The kind of work you are describing does need very careful risk assessment, and a LOLER checklist (requiring YES answers) is essential. I prepared a LOLER checklist (for simpler equipment) by going though the ACoP L113 in fine detail and picking out the essential points: safe working loads, ground inspection, thorough inspection records for all equipment and for accessories like chains, slings, hooks, maintenance logbooks, work at height assessments, fall protection measures, suspension rescue, stability of installation, stability of excavations, adequate lighting, training and instruction, prevent unauthorised entry, avoid obstructions when moving, start-stop-emergency controls, method statements, safe systems of work, suitable and sufficient risk assessment, work permits. If you are the person responsible for safety then I advise you to study L113 and prepare your checklist to include the above points and others particularly applicable to your complex job. On it's own the checklist does not ensure safety as any NO answers will need expert advice and effective corrective actions. John W

Posted By JLH70 Thanks Dave W., I really only want to carry out a "Health Check" for our Sites with Crane Operations. We are audited externally but these audits are not specific to lifting operations and do not go into enough detail (they ask if contract lift, Lifting Plan in place, equipment inspected, competency of appointed person & operator etc). I would like to ensure everything is okay by going into more detail with the checklist. I have asked our H&S advisors to see if they can assist and am awaiting a response. Our sites are well planned, notifiable, well managed (most of them) and all crane operations are contract lifts with reputable suppliers. On one particular site our Client has brought up a possible issue with Man riding baskets which we have resolved we would now like to ensure other sites are in compliance and I thought a simple checklist might be the first step. I have L113 and will study it further as it may be better to create my own checklist. Thanks for all your advise. Jason
