Posted By William I studied the Environmental Management at college eight years ago and feel I may have enough knowledge to get past the associate exam, but would rather a basic course which would refresh my knowledge and I am not willing to pay through the nose for a course, who offers the cheapest course to gain associate membership of the IEMA, preferably by distance learning or online.

Posted By MP Grayson I thought that it was an open book exam anyways.
So me thinks the questions will all be based on their book.
The IEMA hand book ISBN 1-85383-976-0.
Can't see them re-inventing their own wheel.
Crack on.

Posted By David Whitelegg There are actually 3 routes to Associate Membership of the IEMA. One is to take a 2 week course that has an end of course exam and often a workplace based assignment, if succesful you gain membership and most of these include the 1st years membership of the IEMA. There is also one company now offering a distance learning course, can't remember the name and probably shouldn't advertise it if I could but they advertise in the Environmentalist and SHP I believe. The third route is through the national open book exam. With this route you get sent the question papers and have 2 weeks to answer the questions. The last one sounds really easy, however, it isn't! The IEMA are looking for you to demonstrate a good deal of understanding across a broad range of subjects and the questions can cover anything related to the enviromental area. Recent examples ranged from a briefing note relating to sustainable buildings to how the ocean currents (surface and deep ocean) affect climate and how climate change may impact on them. You have only 400 words to answer these questions and simply repeating what can be found in reference material and the web will not get you through.
If you have a reasonable background in the environmental field thenwith some work you should be able to take and pass the national open book exam but don't expect to find all the answers in the one book.
Good luck.

Posted By William I would say its more the legislation that would trip me up as I have not kept up to date with it, if bath uni do a competitive price for the course that would be an option.
I am not prepared to pay between £1500 and £2000 when I have studied the subject to the required standard, I have looked over past question papers and see the legislation as my main problem, also not really familiar with SEA, have read up on it and it seems pretty straight forward, but I will get the IEMA handbook first and read it over and look over previous question papers as well whilst reading the book to get myself up to speed and sit it in October (think that's the next assessment after June).

Posted By William Bath Uni looks like a good option as it is under £700 and would probably be best for me as I do not need to take things from the start but need a course to refresh my knowledge and bring me up to speed with current issues and legislation.
