We operate in several buildings with lifting beams which we use with chain hoists.
Am I right that the actual beam will come under the inspection requirements of LOLER?
And if so will it come under the 12 or 6 month rule?

Mike

Yes, the beam will require inspecting as it's a lifting accessory. Inspection will be required before first use and at six monthly intervals.

Martin,

Pardon my ignorance- but I thought the 6 monthly rule was for any plant/equipment that was involved with lifting manpower, all other was to be on at least an annual basis under the terms of LOLER.

This is statutory of course, a specific risk assessment/ safety manual may go further to require inspections on a more frequent basis due to certain factors.

Can you shed a little light on this subject for me.

Thanks

Lee

Lifting accessories, ie slings chains, beams, manriders etc are generally 6 months. However, its up to you to determine the frequency of inspection based on the usage, environment, frequency etc.

I thought the ruling was:
Anything on the hook:shackles. slings, chains,etc - 6 months.
Lifting equipment such as cranes, FLT - 12 months.
I am still confused about a lifting beam ??

If can quote from indg290
"...you must ensure that:
where appropriate, before lifting equipment (including accessories) is used for the first time, it is thoroughly examined. Lifting equipment may need to be thoroughly examined in use at periods specified in the Regulations (ie at least six-monthly for accessories and equipment used for lifting people and, at a minimum, annually for all other equipment) or at intervals laid down in an examination scheme drawn up by a competent person."

I thought when it mentioned beams in the ACoP that it was referring to spreader beams!
This is a beam that is part of the structure.

Michael,

Are we at cross purposes here? I understand a lifting beam to be a load spreading device with lifting chains attached that operates below the crane hook. Are you referring to a runway beam with a hoist?

Yes, sorry for the confussion it is a Runway beam!
As I said the only reference I can see in the ACoP sound as if it refers to (spreader) beams

No worries Michael :)

Then i would say that "annually for all other equipment or at intervals laid down in an examination scheme drawn up by a competent person" applies.

Martin
