I am used to conducting serious lengthy audits on all sorts of subjects but have recently been pondering the question of how to enable a shoploor worker to become involved in auditing the general safety in their area.
I think I need a quick easy to understand list of questions, preferably answerable by simple tick boxes that the people actually doing the work can understand. The bit that makes it difficult is that I also believe the questions need to concentrate on areas that these same people feel they can influence.
This is not proving as easy as I first imagined!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received.

I have used safety tour forms with up to a dozen sections(eg fire, chemicals, work equipment, storage, waste bins and so on).
This was in a spreadsheet with 3 columns
Column 1 what standard is expected (eg extinguishers in place, fire doors unobstructed etc)
Column 2 standard observed / comments (to be filled in by worker)
Column 3 actions required, by whom, when
Sheet signed of by auditor and area supervisor.
Feeed back to safety dept who collate, and follow actions up........this has worked very well for me.
You don't have to know anything about safety to do it; works very well in pairs with reps, supervisors etc.

I agree with Garyh, we use a similar process where the safety reps are allocated time each week to inspect the workplace, based on a easily followed format.
We have also set up a rota which takes the safety rep out of their usual area of work and puts them into another area, which encourages a fresh look at the workplace.
The form we use is based on the union safety reps report/inspection form which is available on the Internet.
The safety reps then follow a flow chart to resolve any issues discovered on their tour/inspection. We implemented this to leave as little to doubt as possible, it works very well.
The department managers and then the safety department review the information gathered.

Thanks guys, I like the idea of including what they should be looking for beside the question, I'll also take a look on the web at one or two union sites to see what they have (should have thought of that myself)
