Good morning all.

I am preparing fire warden training at the moment. I am interested in showing the Bradford Fire Video, which I originally saw when I did my first safety course about 7 years ago.

I have found on youtube however I cannot access youtube in work. It also will not let me download the file from youtube! I was wondering would anybody have a copy of this video they would be willing to share with me?

Kind regards

safetygirl

At the risk of teaching Grandma......

Remember to tell people that they will be watching a real life situation, that some parts are graphic and give them to option not to watch it. I know it sounds 'nanny state' but some people have been effected by such events in the past.

I agree that it is an excellent video for showing how fire spreads and its characteristics, it also shows how some humans react in such situations.
Good Luck with your training

thank you both very much, I will try download this new version at home tonight and see can i download this way to bring into the office.

Thank you for advise re warning at the begining of training, I will definitely be advising trainees this is a real life and real death video and only to be viewed if they feel they would like to.

if anyone happens to have any other good fire training videos I would be very very happy to receive them!

(ps Im trying not to take offence at the 'grandma' comment!)

We recently had an excellent presentation from our Senior Fire officer.
I've seen the Bradford fire on several occasions and seem to be getting less able to watch it as time goes on.
Another he showed was the 2003 Station Fire in the USA which was started by unauthorised use of pyrotechnics. The speed this fire takes hold is terrifying and it is not comfortable to watch.
The Thresher shop video where the kids throw lighted paper in the display stand to create a distraction so they could steal sweets its amazing from the human behaviour perspective.
regards,
John

Hi - I use a video clip of a Xmas tree fire in a living room. From start to finish it lasts ~ 45 seconds and is less emotive than The Bradford fire one.
If you want a copy let me know.

Hi, there is another way to 'download' from YouTube. You don't need Real Player for this one. Paste the YouTube url (the contents of the address bar in Internet Explorer) into http://www.zamzar.com/url/ decide what format you would like and away you go. I have used this one lots - and you do not get spam from Zamzar or anyone else.

Another site you might want to trawl is WorkSafe BC. It is Canadian - British Columbia but the messages are good for everyone. They encourage you to download by providing links to different formats:

The Station Club fire is an excellent fire related video to use. We use it when we undertake the fire warden, focus on fire training. I usually stop it when it pans back to the entrance hall doors showing the "human crush" as the people in side panic to get out. If you google station club fire you will find it somewhere on t'internet

I was also looking for this the other week but it appears after some dodgy internet postings a few years back the Bradford Fire video is now copyrighted by Yorkshire television & has been authorised for use only by approved fire training centres

2003 'Station' fire in the USA.
The video I watched on YouTube shows a person filming with a light above the camera dazzling people and what looks like taking their time, filming backwards whilst going towards the exit during a serious incident. It shows clearly what is going on, however it does not show this person doing anything to help. In fact he/she in my opinion is adding to the problem by dazzling and taking time to exit. Did he/she cause or add to the pile up by dazzling people?
Just my observations.

Not one I would show - Sorry!

I am not sure what the person who was filming could have done to help people in the immediate seconds the fire begins, he like most of the people was trying to escape the building. I agree that after he managed to escape he could of put his camera down and tried to help those persons caught in the doorway trying to escape instead of carrying on filming, but unfortunately he chose not to for whatever reason. The speed and ferocity with which that fire took hold and claimed lives is frightening and as we know people react differently when faced with that scenario. From what I gather, that building where the fire started was only built of a certain number of people and i believe this number was far exceeded by the number present on the night of the fire and as far as i recall the owners or promotors (whoever they were I am not sure) were prosecuted as a result. I know that doesn't change things for those caught up in the fire but the images that unfold from the camera highlight the fact that fire does spread quickly and chaos and panic follow in quick succession. I respect your decision not to use the footage in your training, however i have used it a number of times and it certainly comes across to those who view it in the training just how quick and devastating this sort of scenario can be.

Hi Dave...

I have seen the Christmas Tree video and it is one of those that gets the message across more effectively than any amount of words can.
Do you know where I can download a copy?

Many thanks

What could the person with the camera have done to help?
They could have got out of the way and then helped - it's as simple as that. Another guy wondering around with a body slung over his shoulder shouting for a medic and then 'getting' in front of the camera again to do it as he wiped away the sweat from his face could also have found a medic near those van shaped things with flashing lights called ambulances. He loved the hero look - I find the video sick.
Personal opinion of course.

The Station Fire camera man was working for a news network to get shots for a story relating to a similar event shortly before.
They recieved a massive fine for contributing to the death toll by leaving camera equipment, cables etc in the fire escape route.

I was not comfortable watching this video and had to turn away towards the end BUT it has completely changed my outlook to public places and actions in a fire.

I was at a hotel at the weekend where someone set fire to the toaster by putting the wrong item in.
Reaction from the diners? Walk up and have a look at the flames coming out of the top
My reaction - turn the toaster off, inform staff and get out of the building. I could clearly see those images and don't want to end up there.

I'm not an advocate of shock tactics normally but these show the real consequences of fire rathar than the hollywood, in there for hours, fighting the fire myth

On the subject of Fire videos. A TV company in association with Avon Fire Service produced a programme a few years ago which demonstrated the speed that fire devlops using a a stunt actor in a house. I recorded it at the time but my recording has been "borrowed". Does anyone have a copy?

I have found a downloadable version at the link below. It is a FLV file but can be changed using the zamzar link mentioned earlier:
http://tubearoo.com/arti.../89649/Stadium_Fire.html

It does seem to have some advertising involved in the online version but I have not checked the downloaded version.
