Posted By Smiff We have been told by a consultant that water alone is no longer sufficient for damping-down asbestos-picking activities (post-demo, mixed with soil) and that a surfactant additive must be used. Can anyone shed any light? We've always sprayed just water (usually site grey-water from de-watering). Won't it pollute? Maybe he's a sales rep for such a product?

Posted By Wilf Archer I don't know about your specific situation but I would agree that water is not a suitable wetting agent. It evaporates too easily leaving asbestos fibres free to be released into the atmosphere. However, I have used PVA adhesive watered down and sprayed onto surfaces as a wetting agent so that when it dries any loose fibres are bonded with the PVA residue. I have also used wall paper paste as a thicker binding agent when having to handle damaged ACMs.
With regards to pollution: It would depend on the volume you are using but you may need to bund and dispose of contaminated spoil. I would also have thought that wetting the soil wouldn't solve the problem of asbestos contamination. At best it may wash it to an area where it might cause greater harm such as a ditch or excavation.
What does your asbestos manager say?
Wilf.

Posted By Smiff That gear seems to be aimed at stripping work?
We're hardly in the same league picking some bits of CBA out of soil, I think.

Posted By Dave Wilson When doing any work with asbestos you should be using a propritry 'wetting agent' AStrip is one as Amphibole asbestos is 'hydrophobic' it does not absorb water, chrysotile is hydrophilic so it does.
He is technically correct,Asbestos task cards A11 & A38 will tell you more, you could also use washing up liquid as well.
