Posted By Lukasz Hi All, 1st question: Any idea from where I can get samples of asbestos to make training for our employees more interesting and giving some experience in recognizing this material? 2nd question: Anybody may have anywhere photographs of Asbestos encountered on landfill sites so it will make training more specific? If yes could you send photographs to j0l0@tlen.pl ? Thanks/Regards LK

Posted By lisa mccaulder Hi Lukasz Have you tried getting in touch with a few local asbestos removal contractors? They are often happy to bag up a sample for you... Lisa..

Posted By Mike Mathews Interesting question regarding the use of samples for training. Can anyone advise if it is actually legal to hold samples of asbestos containing materials, I was under the impression that this was 'technically' against the law, even if they are are double, trebled bagged etc.

Posted By lisa mccaulder I'm happy to be corrected here but I don't think it is illegal no. As long as the risk is properly managed and the person holding the samples is properly trained I think its ok to do that. I have done it - so if it is illegal will someone tell me quickly please!!!.....LOL Lisa..

Posted By Steve Cartwright When I was doing Type 2 Asbestos surveys we had to ensure that any samples we had taken were double bagged and labeled and placed in a container that was locked. The container also had a label on it highlighting that it contained Asbestos samples. When we did our training the tutor DID NOT use any Asbestos samples. He used a substance called superlux whick looks very similar to Asbestos insulating board but is harmless. Not sure of the legalities but would advise not to use Asbestos.

Posted By Cas Hi Dont see the problem with using 'live' samples for training, have done so myself and makes more interesting session for candidates. The tutor should be qualified and competent and will risk assess the use of these samples and implement suitable controls. Cas

Posted By Lukasz Google Images Search does not find any images of asbestos on landfill sites. I am just looking to create training more company specific. I am also opinion that live samples would create training more interesting to employees and more valuable. Thanks for responses

Posted By doug bell Asbestos, is not my area of expertise, but could samples be collected safely, bagged appropriately and then "shrink wrapped", and effectively sealed, to allow the opportunity to see tha sample, yet be controlled?? As I say, asbestos is not my area, so if I am going totally off the wall, please be gentle with the abuse.

Posted By Sally When I did a drugs awareness course they had samples of all the various drugs encased in clear perspex blocks. Would this work with asbestos?

Posted By andy tetlow Hi Lukasz I understand where you are coming from but i dont feel a sample of asbestos would be that useful. The problem with asbestos is, it comes in so many different forms and you would rarely come across it in its natural state. The most useful information to give to trainees is to tell them and show them photos of the places and materials where it is likely to be found, which is anywhere in older buildings. The problem with having a sample is, it could blinker the trainees about what asbestos should look like. The main issue is, we should never assume something is or isn't asbestos until it has been properly analysed. Hope this helps. If you do need any more pictures of asbestos related material, let me know and i will forward you what i can. regards andy tet.
