Posted By A Campbell A large indoor shopping center has sufficient amount of signage at all entrances regarding no smoking inside the store. Is it then also a legal requirement to have the sign also positioned at the entrance to every retail store inside the shopping centre or would the public entrances be sufficient? Almost Friday !

Posted By Merv Newman Each retail store is a separate workplace belonging to a different company and should, if you like to split hairs, show the no smoking sign at the client entrance(s) in addition to that from the loading bay into the premises. Merv

Posted By Sanchez I disagree, if the complex is one building the signage at entrances are sufficient, I agree to the loading bay part though.

Posted By A Campbell Thanks, I too thought it was a little of splitting hairs and possibly pedantic. Especially when the store was brought up for not having a COSHH assessment for 1 bottle of washing up liquid also! I do hope this person is not from the 'elf and safety' fraternity we all are trying to avoid!

Posted By garyh Since when do you need a COSHH assessment for a bottle of washing up liquid? IMHO the enforcement officer did not understand the COSHH regs.

Posted By NJS not sure of the actual rules, but our office is in a shared block and each organisation has their own no smoking signs on doors etc. If i remember correctly, they were sent by the gov before the smoking ban came in and had a header letter stating all orgaisations were to display the signs.

Posted By MickN Surely each retail store is an independant business and what your saying is that they would be relying on the signage at the shopping centre entrance to cover them. Someone might argue that they didn't see the sign as they entered the shopping centre. Also, it is always nice to be able to point and say "read the sign". Mick

Posted By A Campbell I'm pretty certain that if someone decided to light up in a large indoor shopping centre... the security detail would be despatched in a flash and all CCTV camera's buzzing with excitement!

Posted By John Mulhaney Even though the shopping centre will have a no-smoking sign at every entrance, every business within will need to display a no-smoking sign at the entrance to their premises, although the sign is permitted to be smaller than the standard A5 sign. To quote the enforcement guidance from LACORS: "All premises that are required by law to be smokefree will be required to display the prescribed no-smoking signs at each entrance for use by people.... There are some situations where a smaller sign may be displayed as an alternative to the A5 sign. A sign that consists of only the international no-smoking symbol in red and black with a minimum diameter of 70mm can be displayed at entrances to smokefree premises where: -they are located within other smokefree premises that carry the A5-sized sign at entrances, e.g. a bar within a train station, or a shop within an indoor shopping mall" Enjoy your Friday

Posted By Nick Taggart It is a requirement in England that the correct sign is displayed at the entrances to all premises wether it be a shoping centre or a office building with different tenants. Signs are available free from smoke england
