Hi Everyone,

i'm currently working on a basic health and safety induction which i need to deliver to an audience (number not disclosed yet, could be 30+) and wondered if anyone had any ideas or funny experiences of this?

I'm looking at addressing a variety of people and didn't want to stand up and preach "you should do this, the company should do that" for fear of losing the attention span within 5 secs

I only have 15 minutes with these people!

Any ideas greatly appreciated

NB,
Sounds like you are holding a presentation for a group of visitors as 15 min H&S induction?

First I'd list what you require them to know regarding their H&S whilst on site.
Second - consider powerpoint or similar using aims, requirments, recap etc.

Maybe look at graphic illustarations, sounds, video clips and humerous cartoon clips where it is appropiate?

NB, could you indicate what sort of environment this is? If it's a fireworks factory, I would suggest that you run for your life. You could probably get clear in 15 mins If it's an office environment, you could doubtless pull it off. But it all depends.

A 15 min H&S induction for teachers?
Sounds rather short... unless they are attending as day visitors or you have a lot to cram into 15 mins and keep their attention span... if you spot any nodding offf... send them to the naughty step!

I fully understand why you have only been given 15 mins, I also work for two schools and TEACHERS do not have accidents or illnesses, it just isnt the done thing.

How i grabbed their attention was to show them a video clip of NORMAL people being affected by fire. Funnily they have asked for further training. First step complete.

My advice is you will need to assess you barriers and address those first, time allocated i would suggest is you fisrt one.

i used to get pressurised when inducting visitors and some subies who'd worked on similar sites into speeding up the inductions (heard it all before etc etc), the site was another 15 minute walk away so i'd walk down with them and discuss a few on site risks and procedures etc. (this would be after they spent 10-15 minutes filling out a safe work plan, which was done daily (clients rules)). on one occassion while walking down with about 5 new subiies, i was telling them about a few unsavoury characters in the area when we were stoned by a bunch of kids, needless to say the subies learnt the hard way about the local environment!!

presenting to teachers!! dont forget to mention stress, working half days, no weekends, all those holidays, i dont know how they cope with it all!!
