Dear all.
just doing a bit of research. The wearing of safety specs is common practice now, not just with specific tasks but as 'Blanket' rules across most areas. In other words as soon as you get out of the office or car. My concerns are that a lot of employees wear glasses as prescribed by Opticians. Some Safety Specs that are issued are the perspex type with very poor or distorted lens thus in some cases causing headaches, and nausia when worn in conjunction with own prescribed ones. Has anyone else come acros this problem and if so how have you dealt with it. My concern is that there could be a case for damages if an employee was told to wear and issued with a certain type which over a period of time caused a deteriation with his/her site. Is it that Health monitoring should be introduced annually? just a thought but a concern to me.
Regards
Ian

Art,
Safety specs worn over prescription specs may cause headaches, and possibly nausea, due to the distortion, however, they won't cause any damage or deteriration in eyesight, or indeed the function of the eye. If you have a blanket rule that says "safety eyewear" must be worn, then you should provide, at the Company's expense" prescription safety specs for all those who require them.

Prescription lensed safety glasses are available. We provide payment for safety lensed glasses with side plates / guards for our personnel who need them for work. However, we only pay for eye teats and glasses for DSE workers in accordance with the regs. Others who wear glasses to see would need to have their own tests if they didn't work for us, therefore its not our responsibility.

We only advocate the use of 'over specticals' for occassional users of safety glasses.
Where prolonged or regular use is required we supply.. basic but effective prescription safety glasses.
