Hi,
I have just been requested to provide a health and safety plan for a shop fitting project in Holland starting in the next 2 weeks. The Plan needs to be in Dutch.
Can anyone advise me regarding;
the Regulations equivalent to our CDM
if anyone out there can translate English into Dutch, (the Plan will also have to be in English as there will be English guys operating the site).
if I use the Microsoft word translation will this do the job for me, and if it will how do I do it?
I'm sure further questions will arise as I go along but thought I should ask ASAP.

I've just fired this off to some belgian friends, on the dutch border, I'm pretty certain they can do this, but you will probably have to pay something.
And your people might need the dutch equivalent of a cscs card.

Make sure your procedures etc are translated by a reputable translation company - You need to know that these are true translations of the actual documents.
I tried the google and word translation tool and when I translated them back from the language to English some parts of the text did not make sense.

Good one Sharon. And most of the European countries (except maybe the French) are quite happy working with other languages. Particularly English (aren't we lucky ?)
OK. you must be up with the UK CDM (or are you from Ireland ?) Doing that will get you by in most of Europe. (French have gone a bit weird as always)
Also you must have someone with whom you talk in Holland. If you really want to, do a machine translation (they are, as Sharon said, (didn't she ?) total rubbish but ok for a first cut)
Keep it simple and your correspondant could fire it back to you in about half an hour.
And no-one is going to read it anyway. All we ever do is look to see which boxes have been ticked.

Really I don't think so. Think, ladies and gentlement, of the last contractor's RA you looked at. I did three last thursday. 5 minutes on each 10-page document. And no-one, except me (goodygoody) was wearing a hard hat.
One of those sites was a real fire risk. The second was very very good. The third was risking the lives of three people.
The fourth one didn't actually have a risk assessment. "We're just chopping down trees with a chain saw. Do it every day don't we ?"

Sharon, thanks for your input.
We do have a local contact in Holland, not sure yet what he is but at least it's a start. His English is pretty good so perhaps I will use him to translate my Plan. I think I'll keep it to the bare minimum and see what I get away with?
I am up to speed with CDM as I carry out site inspections for a major high street retailer and read method statements all the time. They use the same contractors who are listening to advice and guidance and most method statements are good but never cover all the work.
I'll wait until tomorrow - Tuesday to see if there is any more guidance coming my way, Thanks so far.
