Posted By Mark Eastbourne Good afternoon everyone I am wondering whether you may be able to help me? Can the special glass which is placed in Fire Doors be made from glass which does not have the wire mesh inside it? The reason being is that I have just found some newly put up Fire Doors but the glass looks "normal", i.e. it does not have the wire mesh. I have tried to look for the BS on the glass but no joy and am now wondering whether Fire Doors are manufactured with special glass which does not have to have the wire mesh inside of them. Can anyone help? Regards Mark

Posted By J.Morrison Hi Mark, yes you can have fire-resisting glass which is not the "Georgian" wired variety. It usually, but not always, has a marking in one corner cofirming its fire-resisting quality. John

Posted By Andy Petrie The Georgian wired mesh is not that great for looking through, and would be compounded is there was smoke in the air. While both are suitable I would go for the one that provides the best visibility, hence fire toughened clear class.

Posted By Thomas2008 Mark I had a similar situation a few years back. There are many types of fire resisting glazing on the market that are wire free and look like regular glass You want to look for discrete acid etching in the corner that shows the product name e.g pyroshield etc or a BS mark. the relavnt standard is BS476 Part 22. If you can't find this standard marked then I would not accept it until it can be proven otherwise. Thomas

Posted By Simon If the fire door is new, you will have a fire test cert indicating satisfaction in test conditions undertaken to BS476 Pt22. That test cert is issued against the door, its glazing and the frame. If you have this and there has been no alteration made to the door... Just make sure your maintenance guys haven't been changing fire door glass without you knowing it!
