Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have been asked if an employee is entitled to welding goggles - but the employee wants them with in built prescription lenses. I don't know too much about this, but I thought that the welding goggles or mask (PPE) would fit over his own glasses?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, B

Unfortunately I no longer ahve a copy but the BN ES166 standard would provide all the information you need to know in regards to appropriate eye protection for different types of welding.

I have to say I've never heard of prescription goggles (welding or any other types)

Perhaps the guy means that he thinks he needs prescription safety glasses to wear under the welding visor? ...just a thought

Barry,

What type of welding is being undertaken, if it is intrusive welding such as MIG, goggles are not a suitable protection, spatter, UV etc and prescription glasses should be under a suitable face visor. Goggles OK for gas welding and you can get goggles which fit over glasses. If you are wearing primary protection ie goggles, visors then standard glasses are OK underneath. As above never heard of prescription goggles!

You can get welding helmets with an inner magnifying lens, up to 2.5 x I think, which is perhaps what the employee meant?
