Hello, please could someone give me some advice regarding swimming pools
There is a pool which is only 4'4' deep and is not currently manned at all times, only via CCTV, which is watched by first aiders not lifeguards

What would you think: (bearing in mind that I know a RA is required) but:

Is a lifeguard or guards required
Do they have to be at the poolside
Does the depth make a difference
How long does the training take to become a qualified and competent lifeguard

Thanks

Hi Saria

A little more information is needed as to how whether or not you need or how many lifeguards your swimming pool needs (number of swimmers, ages, size of pool, etc)

Do they have to be at poolside - depends upon the number of swimmers etc and the distance the lifeguard has to travel to get to any incident. They usually work on the 10:20 system which is 10 seconds to spot and incident and 20 seconds to get to the scene.

Yes the depth make a difference

Training to be a qualified lifeguard takes around 40 hours for a confident and competent swimmer. However, to become a competent lifeguard is a different story!!!

Have you seen HSG 179: Health and Safety in Swimming Pools, from HSE?

Hi Saira,

Can you give a bit more information please? there are differents sets of guidance available for pools governed by councils than there are for hotel based pools, as a minimum you would need a member of staff on duty who has NARS or responders and in the event of an emergency they would just respond but not be seen to actively lifeguard. Hope that helps, failing that ask to speak to someone at IQL (institute of qualified lifeguards)they are very helpfull
