Posted By Sheila EJ Keogh Hi all, I'm sure i've read that external waste bins (e.g. commercial) should be stored at least 3m from the building (prevention of fire spread). Could anybody confirm this, or point me to where I may find the answer? Many thanks, Sheila

Posted By SteveD-M Sheila In a lot of cases it will depend on what your insurance company are happy with. I have heard of 3m being acceptable and then again I have had one insurer say 15m is the min... You pays your money....

Posted By John Donaldson I have copied this from another forum I belong to where there was a similar discussion “CFPA Europe Guideline 7 Safety distances waste 2005. This is a European Insurers' guide. It can be download for free from www.thefpa.co.uk. There is no 10m distance. The largest is 8m. They give guidance based on the size & height of the bin with a min for small bins of 2.5 m. If space is not available a fire resisting barrier can be used to separate the bins from the building. Recommendations are given on the ratings for these."

Posted By Colin Behan I get the normally 6 metre distance from the fire safety guide, (Section 1 Further guidance on fire risks and preventative measures) which states "never place skips against a building - they should normally be a minimum of 6m away from any part of the premises."

Posted By Sean Fraser "can be download for free from www.thefpa.co.uk" John, just a point of note - you have to be a member of the FPA to download this. Might be free at that point, but access is restricted. From my reading of the responses, best option for anyone unsure of what to do, contact the insurer and ask for advice. Then, as the saying goes, you're covered!
