Can anybody advise me on the law, on the use of Hard Hats in an Aviation Maintenance Hangar.

Ive been told by many people that the aviation industry has a clause on this subject where it is not applied to aviation. due to access to parts of the aircraft etc.

i cant seem to find anything in black and white to prove this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Alex,

What law are you referring to? PPE is down to RA, our guys wear bump caps when poking into confined spaces.

In the absence of law go back to risk assessment.

We used to wear hard / bump caps if working underneath, but not inside.

May depend on the age of the hangar. MoD have problems sometimes in older hangars with bolts etc falling from the heights, although these rarely, if ever, have any equipment left in them.

Take a look at the site risk assessments. Challenge, if necessary, it is your right.
