Posted By RBW100 Hi all, Does any one have any experience of the use of pallet pullers? They are designed to pull pallets that are too far from the back of a trailer/lorry to be lifted by forks but not far enough away to allow for the use of a pallet truck to get them near to the back. The one I've seen is this: http://www.longreachuk.com/Does anyone know if these items are seen as 'legit' attachments. Rob

Posted By David Whaley RBW100,
I have no experience of this type of attachment. so perhaps I am not responding directly to your question.
However, I would be concerned about the use of one fork, lifting with one fork is a no no. Beyond that, the condition of the surface over which the pallet is being pulled could cause problems, as could the height and stability of the load on the pallet.
Just something to think about.

Posted By Stefan Daunt I can't see how that pallet puller would work? the pallet would be pulled out at an angle and any weight on the pallet would mean the pallet blocks being pulled off. I'd like to be Peter Jones and that turn up on dragons den!

Posted By RBW100 The friction of the floor will have a significant bearing on whether the blocks will be ripped off, but my experience is that that would be unlikely.
My gut feeling is that the device would reduce the chance of some trying to handball the pallet to a liftable position and hence it would be a good thing.
However having never seen one before I would be grateful to an FLT 'experts' out there who had!

Posted By RBW100 A quick google and I found that the device I linked to above was shortlisted for the 2005 Fork Lift Truck Association Safety Award, suggesting it has some acceptance from the industry (see here http://www.manufacturing...com/news/fhv/fhv111.html). Would still be good to hear from any one with direct experience. Rob

Posted By TBC I don't like the extra strain put on the fork from the wrong angle. These forks are for lifting not pulling and constant use on the same fork could lead to damage and uneven lifting. It could (as someone said before) cause more damage to an uneven trailer or lorry surface. On a heavily loaded pallet the middle block could be damaged. The drivers operation of the truck also leaves a lot to be desired mounting and dismounting incorrectly and operating the forks whilst moving etc.
Not impressed! Sorry.

Posted By RBW100 Thanks for the comments so far.
I would still like to hear from anyone who has direct experience or if anyone can point me to any advice from an industry or safety body on the use of such devices.
Also given the generally negative feedback so far, can anyone suggest a solution to removing a pallet from the rear of an articulated trailer, which is too far from the rear of the trailer to be reached with forks (even with extensions) but can not be moved by a pallet truck (as there is not enough space to manoeuvre it) nearer to the rear for lifting. The only solution I can see is to 'dock' the trailer, but this is not always possible, especially when unloading on sites without docks!
Thanks
Rob

Posted By RBW100 I called the HSE infoline to see if the HSE had an official position on the pallet pullers I'm interested in. They have passed my enquiry to a HSE inspector, but I have yet to get a response from them. When I do, I'll update here with the HSE comments.

Posted By CS Chen i would say it is a good idea for solving pallet unloading on rear of the trailer. As I am not an expert on forklift, i do concern whether frequent use of such a long reach pallet puller will result in uneven of fork or not.
Look forward to seeing more comment.

Posted By RBW100 Finally got a response from the HSE. They are not keen on the idea of pallet pullers. Concerns with strain on pallets as well as forks. Looks like a no go on this.
