Hi all,

Does anyone know off the top off their head if it is a legal requirement for 'emergency' isolation switches at entrances and exits of commercial kitchens.

I am aware of the relatively new requirements, but I am unsure of retrofitting for older kitchens. Please note that all the appliances have individual isolation valves.

I am happy to recommend on the basis of good practice / risk assessment, but it would be better if I could quote a legal requirement.

Thanks in anticipation and quick responses would be appreciated.

Cheers

No such thing as a stupid question!!!

I don't know if there is a requirement for emergency shut offs at exits / entrances but my 'educated guess' would be that there isn't.

This 'guess' is on the basis that we have had visits from the fire authority and fire safety consultants at a number of our premises over recent months and none have indicated that this is a requirement.

Obviously there is a requirement to have the isolation valves but I don't think that the location is crucial..as long as they are clearly indicated, accessible and employees know that they should be turned off in an emergency (if safe to do so.)

I stand to be corrected of course !!!

FH,

Many thanks for your response.

I have managed to find my info on gas safety in commercial kitchens!! I knew I had it but my home office filing system is pants.

Anyway just for info as you were kind enough to respond and to those who may have cause to look at gas safety in Kitchens.

The legislation is the Gas Safety (installation and use) Regs 1998 and the HSE have a fact sheet (gas safety in catering and hospitality no. 23 (rev 1). The legislation is now backed up with a BS6173.

Each appliance (after 2001) should have a manual means of isolation.

New ventilation /extraction systems must be fitted with an interlocking device and flame supervision system linked to appliances. New installations fitted with the above SHOULD NOT have an overide function.

Those that do not have a interlocking into the extraction must be RA'd, maintained etc. New and second hand replacement individual appliances should be fitted with flame supervision devices again linked to th extraction.

Therefore, to answer my own question there is no legal requirement I can find that requires emergency isolation to entrance and exits etc.

Cheers

Paul
