Hi all,
Just started a new job with a waste management company and have been asked to review their toolbox talks - they appear to have quite a comprehensive list (about 50).
Was wondering if anyone could give any help on how detailed they should be, what basics to include, etc?
I realise this is quite an open question as it depends on the task/jobs - some discussion/ assistance would be good.
Cheers

In experience short and sweet is best...little like hill street blues (God am I showing my age!!) be safe out there today..
I have felt that a monthly program of daily 2-3 minute presentation/speech followed by discussion on key topics works.
Happy to share although mine are from Distribution/Driving environment..

Barry,
For what it is worth my advice would be look at what the existing one cover, 50 is a nice round (generic?) number, and make sure they are relevant to the work being carried out. Talk to the employees about their tasks this should give you A) an idea of what is relevant and what is required re subject matter, B) What is OTT, what has been omitted, C) An insight into the culture of the company and D) a good grounding in the new environment. I have been sent some excellent 1 pagers which as mentioned earlier are to the point I could send you a specific subject one for a once over if you want, no copyright issues.

Hi, It is interesting to know about reviewing Toolbox Talk especially in waste management section.
One can identify the possible risks/ procedures or any changes invoved in the present system in Waste management system.
Outline and discuss with superisors, seniors the need of improvement through commnicating the safety awareness message in the toolbox topics with the team workers.
Toolbox talks should be in simple langusge, pictures, diagrams, forms, distribute the topics of toolbox talk on regular weekly or daily basis.
Team involvement helps in motivating everyone,at the start of duty, for 2 to 5 minutes, Ideas of carrying the job safely or improving the method of doing the job.It is a good learning, sharing of information to carryout works safely

Ask the blokes who are doing the work. They will inform you of the daily risks with equipment, driving, routes, processes, health.
Work as a team and engage people.
In my experience toolbox talks are a bare minimal and you should aim higher by empowering people.
Ask the team to review the existing also and you will need to do some homework to ensure they are in line with current legislation.
Oh and call the HSE for advise. Although industry bodies would have much more information along with local authority.
Good luck
