Your choice of intervention may, naturally, reflect the culture of your organisation as much as your personal preference.
To me, it is curious that you appear to regard as necessary to offer options to the employee directly rather than to coach the line manager to manage more resourcefully. By 'cascading' coaching through line managers, it's possible to deepen the accountability of employees and their managers without relieving them of their own responsibilities to accomplish tasks and to act as leaders.
Coaching isn't a panacea but where it's done well, it usually turns out to be time effective for safety (and other staff) professionals as well as very cost effective for the business.

Hello everybody - just to clarify
1 I don't know where you got that I suggested sacking her.
2 This isn't my posting, its Tracey's
3 I attended a manual handling course, with a powerpoint and a box. I think I might have had the same trainer. DIABOLICAL However, I also attended Manual Handling Training for the Trainer, delivered by the Fire Service. BRILLIANT!
4 At this point I'm loosing the will to live.

"Still not clear on this how does the person in question get to work" maybe she drives herself, and lives close enough not to need to use a motorway? Or walks? ...
I think sometimes companies forget that they will from time to time attract people who only want a local job, and only during the hours that the post advertises.
Did the advertisement, or even contract of employment, or employee handbook make clear that remote training was going to be made a requirement (as opposed to an option which a lot of us enjoy).
Subjecting someone to remote training is not the only answer. There is telephone coaching, video conferencing, remote PC access + telephone, there is cascade training (the other people in the office have presumably attended). What will happen to new employees in 12 months time? If you have one new employee per year, will you set up a training course just for one - or will you use 'on the job' training like most companies do?
Is the training being offered so very special it can only be done in the location you have selected? No (you say you select a place to suit best you can)... so maybe it is the company being difficult rather than the employee?
I think this is personal comfort of the employee versus cost to the company. So the company has to decide how essential the training is, and whether the cost v the detriment is a sound investment or not because in my opinion, you might have trouble forcing her :-)

From a personal point of view how user friendly is the whole training package?
how far away,
does it involve an overnight stay,
if so is there a rate of pay for the number of hours/days away from home,
does the individual have responsibilities at home, (is she a carer for example)
I don't like being in other people's cars as I get travel sick if I don't drive, and I don't like depending upon others,
There may be people she may have to travel with that she does not get on with,
consider personal hygiene,
etc. etc. etc.
Does the job really depend on the employee receiving the training on offer?

Tracey:
This problem shouldn't be on your desk and (respectfully) shouldn't be on this very public Forum either.
It is often the case that just enough information is teased out, and enough people read it, that very private information is seen to be made very public.
Give the problem to HR.
And ask the Moderators to remove this thread immediately.

Ron,
I agree with you. This is a HR issue and the tone of some of the commnents are definately inappropriate. Where are the Moderators?
