I am creating a new pedestrian walkway in a car park to separate vehicles (only cars) and pedestrians, and obviously need to install a safety barrier.
Does anyone know what the distance should be from the ground to the first horizontal beam - ie to protect people's ankles and shins should a car try to get through?

Martin,
It's the distance between the verticals that stops the vehicles.

You do not necessarily have to build a barrier.
A raised kerb (for example) serves that same purpose in most cases?

Thanks for the replies. I'll look at the BS spec.
I'd rather put in a barrier. It's a 45 metre straight run on top of existing concrete and therefore bolting a barrier will be easier.
