Hi,

I am looking for legislation that either prohibits or allows us to modify lift truck forks by welding lugs onto the tips to stop loads rolling off.

Lots of people have differing opinions on this, some say once they have been modified, it invalidates the certificate for the fork, hence why I am looking for legislation.

You can aquire forks with lugs fitted onto the side, in my previous company a hopper was used for emptying product into. The pallet was tipped forward to around 70 degrees and the forks were widened on pallet entry to engage the lugs behind the pallet blocks before tipping.

The FLT had this attachment specifically manufactured for the hopper use. Quite clever really, it wouldn't let you tip without the lugs being engaged into the pallet blocks. But as for your initial question, without this modification being carried out by the FLT manufacturer, it could be an insurance issue on it's LOLER inspection.

Johno - I would speak to your MHE supplier or the manufacture as there are many attachments these days for handling equipment and you may not need to weld anything. I have seen lugs welded on order picking trucks to stop roll cages coming off as they turned corners but this was done with consultation with the suppliers and Insurance Company.

The welding process may effect the integrity of the steel forks.

Lift truck forks are not mild steel, they are a chromium/molybdenum alloy. Welding by any other type of alloy will lead to cracks in the fork area around the weld. There are alloys available for dis-similar metals, but welding lugs onto lift truck forks is a specialist job. The forks will NEED stress relieving afterwards and then crack testing. They will then need to be weight tested and stamped with the load rating.
If you do it yourself the insurance inspector will probably query the job anyway....

I doubt there is any legislation either way only a standard. I would consult your FLT supplier for advise .

Morning Johno,

It is my understanding that any modifications to your truck MUST be carried out by the manafacturer. After modifications to the truck it will need to re-tested for it`s SWL as you have added weight to the forks, also the load centre will have changed as well.
So get the manafacturer to modify your truck and he will also fix a new rate capacity place showing the new SWL and load centre.

Thanks for all the responses.I have found the BS-ISO that covers servicing so will get a copy and have a read. It is BS ISO 5057:1993 for those interested.
