Posted By Gregory Lenton Can anyone advise what are the requirements for crane safety systems when they are being used for lifting of man baskets. I have heard of a "dead mans break" system but none of the cranes at site have anything like this fitted. Any advice would be appreciated. NB The construction site is located in India and the work involves lifting personnel to heights exceeding 10 metres. Thanks

Posted By Rich Bannister If you're in India, you would have to check on the local laws / reg's. I'm in the Republic of Georgia where there aren't any reg's on this, so we default to UK regulations (i.e. in this case LOLER) - Is there any other option - Has the crane been inspected / approved in the last 6 months - Are all safety devices working (Anti 2 block, RCI/SLI, etc) - Will the crane maintain load in event of complete power failure - Are the brakes applied progressively (i.e. to avoid shock loading) - Can the load be lowered safely in the event of a complete power failure - In the event of a primary brake or transmission failure will the load be prevented from free falling - In the event of primary brake failure can the load be lowered safely - Does the crane have an e-stop - Is the crane designed to prevent inadvertant free fall You should be answering yes to all of these to get close to meeting LOLER requirements. Email me if you need any more info.
