Hi all I'm after some advice and views on refresher safety training.I deliver safety training, ranging from manual handling to how to wear different types of PPE for all our employee's.
Every 1 to 2 years I carry out refresher training. I feel that I achieve very little out of these session and no matter how interesting i try to make them they are boring for me and the trainee.
I liken it to being re-trained on how to make a cup of tea every one to two years. ( not fun )
I would like to try something new that is of more benefit to the employee and the companies resources rather than just getting the annual signatures.
I have thought about task demonstrations by each employee, This would involve me asking an employee to carry out a manual handling task for example and correcting anything that is wrong and positive re-enforcement of lifting correctly, Recording demonstration and doing away with that type of refresher training.
This would also link in with our behavioural safety programme.
Has anyone tried it or something similar and got some advice.

Martin, my thoughts (although not new by any means) is if it is a refresher course, and is classroom based; get the trainees to do the work for you. If you have a list of items to cover such as Manual Handling, COSHH, etc. etc. split them into small groups tell them what the subject heading is or show them a picture/photo with poor housekeeping, or poor work practice and then get them to identify the hazards, and risks associated with the item/photo (perhaps you may have to remind them what the definition of hazard and risk is). Give them a couple of sheets of flipchart paper, some marker pens, and see if they can develop a risk assessment based on their group work. Once they have completed their risk assessment get them to come out to the front present their risk assessment and get comments from the other groups. This can become quite competitive. You may want to introduce your own company Risk Assessments at the end and see if they match the ones prepared by the groups. You lead throughout with minimum fuss, and they can all be a safety officer for a couple of hours.

If the training is boring for you both, perhaps they don't need it (I like your analogy of the cup of tea!)
Perhaps what you need is not training but some form of competence re-assessment, much like the approach to Fork-lift driver training? If an employee can demonstrate safe lifting technique, correct fitting of PPE, they don't need a refresher, do they?
For compliance/claim defensibility purposes you can just keep a record of the competence assessment, rather than the training.
Alternatively, I agree with the approach suggested above - get them to train you - its a lot more fun and usually more memorable.

I can remember doing a training course on general H&S including manual handling. One young guy in the room was keen to show us that he had some previous training in manual handling and volunteered to be the demonstrator. I ask him to pick up a box that was lying in the room. He bend down wrongly as he went to lift the box – I said what are you doing that’s the wrong way, bend your knees etc– he said ‘Oh you want me to start now’. I said no I want you to lift properly all the time. He again went to lift the box properly this time – I said wait ‘You don’t know what is in the box – it may be too heavy for you and you don’t know where it has to go’ - route planning before the lift. It was good learning for the others, but a bit embarrassing for the young volunteer, he’ll probably keep quiet in future training courses. So refresher training is a good idea as bad habits soon creep back, but like others have said be inventive and set up some scenarios for the trainees to ponder and solve.
