What do you think are the downsides to being a member of this profession?
I'll start the ball rolling
1. Being asked questions outside of work which are nothing really to do with health and safety but you are expected to advise on ie. the neighbour is parking his car outside our house and blocking our drive. What can health and safety do about it.
2. Pretending I'm a plumber at parties to avoid getting into discussions about how I've banned kids playing conkers etc.etc.
3. The old chestnut "Have you done a risk assessment/wrote a procedure for that ha ha?" when making tea/coffee.
Light hearted replies within the AUG's only please. Miseries need not post lecturing how this posting is a waste of time on such a professional forum as this.

I'll never get my yacht in the South of France
It's getting increasingly hard to find suitable leather patches.

Couple of days ago was told by a lorry driver that my job shouldn't even exist as "elf & safety is common sense" and "people should be trusted to decide for themselves wots dangerous".
"So you think people should be left to their own devices where asbestos is concerned do you, and what about isocyanates or organic dusts what do you know about the risks of those"? said I.
"Ummm, err .... f**koff" was the reply.

1 year of good work on a project can be tainted by 1 incident however engineers , foremen etc mistakes are forgotten fairly quickly.

As someone who believes passionately that every worker has the right to go home at the end of the day in as good a state of health as when he came to work in the morning I never hide what I do.
I actually welcome the somewhat uninformed comment about elf 'n safety. At least it gives me a chance to put the record straight and, hopefully, to get at least one more person understanding what health and safety is really about.
Surely, if we hide what we do isn't this allowing those who perpetuate the myth to gain wider acceptance? Let's stand up for ourselves and wave the banner!
Or, at 68, am I still as naive about the human race as I was when only 18?

Chris,
you appear to be a very serious person. I don't hide what I do but if someone wants to discuss something when I am socialising I just mention my hourly rate.

Not perhaps hiding what we do, but a bit of subtle camouflage can quickly get the conversation back on track should the need arise.....tell them you are a consultant in life assurance and risk management. If they show an interest, you can then describe what you do in the terms Chris P suggests.
Failing that, I can tell them I used to have a "real job" in engineering and airborne radar test equipment, etc. (ah.......TSR2!)

Like the day my mate asked me to write to a local farmer who allowed sheep onto his land. He said it was a serious breach in H&S Legislation.

Much like others postings, it is other peoples reactions or attitudes.
If I see eyes rolling backwards or someone about to start chuntering on about the nanny-state, then I'm quickly in to remind them, Chris P-style, about what H&S is actually about.

Made me think of a similar thread from the good old days :) ]
It includes a cracking reply from Merv as always :)
How about the downside of helping others do risk assessments or helping to persuade their employers what the law is, when you could be enjoying a relaxing weekend pint?
Oh no that's not a downside I love every minute of H&S; when drinking that pint I can never resist telling the bar keep what he needs to do to comply with the law too!
Once after a cider or two too many I was prevented from telling some police officers they should be wearing HI-VIS if they were going to stand / kneel around fighting in the centre of a busy roundabout!
:)
Why am i still typing?

I guess you have to be pretty thick skinned. I took a lot of stick when I was a train driver, nothing much has changed.
My only salvation is that those who scorn at the industry are usually the first in cue when it suits their purpose.
Is it 5pm yet?

I always tell people that I am trying hard to make myself unemployed!! That I am often demanded to do my job badly? and I am viewed as a constant source of knowledge and should be fully available when they want me (best kept in a box under the desk) As for telling people I'm a CDM-C, I get angry and blame everyone else.

Ha ha some of these are classic....
I once had the entire Workforce anger directed at me because the Local Authority had shut the Local Cafe for health and safety reasons...
As far as they were concerned, being involved in "Health and Safety" meant I had some link to the decision and obviously was working in cahoots with the LA officer...

When people ask what do you do? I tell them that I do a job that looks after people's wellbeing at work and then explain the types of things I have to do as part of my day job, once they have said "thats interesting" which invariably they do then I tell them I am a H&S Consultant - I love seeing their faces as the lightbulb goes on that we are not all bonkers conkers and that we do an important and useful job...
