Posted By Paul The company I work for at the moment is using man-baskets approx 8ft x 4ft which are attached to chains and Block of crane for lifting of personnel to heights at times exceeding 100ft. My questions are we are presently as a systym of work attaching a sling to bill hook on the crane block to this the personnel attach their scaff hook /lanyards. This is done in case the chains fail and the personnell which are in basket will be prevented from falling. Is this a safe systym of work? Can we employ another method for such W.A.H

Posted By Casanova Paul, What if landyard fails, what if crane cable fails? If the man basket and chains are inspected by trained and competent personnel before use, as they should be, why bother with attaching to hook at all/ Casanova X

Posted By Mark H As above but you will still need to provide body harness and lanyard to comply with WaH as still risk of a fall (if basket catches on an obstruction. As long as all equipment is fit for purpose and inspected at intervals defined by RA and by a competent person you'll be complying with WaH.

Posted By Hossam According to the golden rule of "Do what ever practicable to keep risks as low as possible" I totally agree with what you do.. especially if the job risk assessment addresses the possibility of basket slings getting snagged or coming in contact with any sharp edges. Hossam

Posted By alex mccreadie Paul what you are doing is completely correct. We always quoted in our training courses to use this method and it passed as a best practice. It has been muted by HSE and the like that you can attach to a secure point in the basket. I neither agree or disagree with this comment. Casanova stick to womanising XXX

Posted By Casanova Alex, I'm sure you can see the crane hook from that high standpoint, my point being where do you stop with saefty safety measures, do you use a larger crane to secure the crane liting the man basket to? H&S is as much about woman/man management as it is saving lives and improving health. Give the normal person some credit they are not stupid and quite rightly become desensitised to protective measures when they are continually subjcted to over the top systems of work, like the mandatory wearing of eye protection! Posted By Paul Thanking you one and all for your responses. In answer to some of your query's yes we have all checks/certification 6 monthly/yearly on all chains slings man baskets. We use a crane company for all lifting operations and we have there paperwork on our safety file. As to casanova half biscuit did it fall off into a cup of tea?? As to use of the sling in man basket operations we will continue to employ this method of work for W.a.H
