Posted By Paul D How often should abrasive wheels be changed?
We have a couple in the maintenance workshop that are used when necessary at infrequent periods. I remember reading on the forum that a wheel has a 3 year shelf life, so therefore if the wheel is used little it should be replaced after 3 years anyway?
I have also found out that the maintenance engineers have received no formal training with regard to abrasive wheels.
Ive got the reply that 'we've been using them for years'. This may be the case, but who set the machines etc?
What should a training course contain on this subject!

Posted By lewes A wheel usually has a shelf life of 3 years but thats from the date of manufacture and not necessarily the day you actually got the wheel!!
The wheel should have an expiry date on the label and this should answer you question.
I dont know of any defined time for a wheel to stop. Only that you shouldnt slow it down using other means and you should allow it to slow naturally.

Posted By Stevie C Paul,
Get your maintenace men trained ASAP on Abrasive Wheels. I completed training with our maintenance dept last year and was constantly reminded that they have been using them for years without injury. However, what I did discover was that they were using grinding wheels one minute and then removing to replace with a cutting wheel and so on. This is fine for metal diamond blades but not for reinforced wheels. Once the wheel has been placed on the machine it stretches and if removed from the machine it should be disposed of. If the wheel is put back onto the machine again it has a high risk of shattering etc... Abrasive Wheel training can be completed by a competent person and if you like I can send you the training sheets, SSoW i use. All the maintenance gang were very surprised after the training. Hope this helps.....
