i was at a seminar earlier this week with one of the major contracting group members. this aprticular company are insisting that all their supply chain be CHAS accredited - no problem with that at all.

the issue was raised about various other accrediataion schemes and also about companies who are ISO 18001, the guy from CHAS then stated that ISO 18001 does not meet the requirements of CDM 2007 in relation to contractor assessments and training of the workforce, and that a gap analysis tool was being developed by CHAS to fill in the gaps as such.

anyone got further information on this issue? the reason i ask is that our company has just begun the ISO 18001 process so i want to ensure that it is done correctly and complies with the CDM regs.

thanks in advance

CHAS, CSCS, safecontracor, constructionline et all, all money making schemes and hoops to jump through.

It might be interesting if when a company has been successfully prosecuted for a health and safety offence, if a list of their accreditation's was posted.

I wuld make sure that your personal system covers what you want not what the system wants - you can build in extrea components

True, Any badly put together system will not properly adress the true competence evidence off the organisation and demonstrate it. CHAS is a particular example of one that I personally think is over-rated. The ACOP itself to CDM is also poorly thought out and lacks any real coherence in its approach.

The real problem is that many people do not actually understand the needs of a competence management system and thus do not construct one.

Hi Al

If 18001 is correctly implemented, i.e. all relevant risks are identified and relevant legislation, as the standard requires, yes it will meet CDM compliance and any other relevant standard. This is why the standard includes a legislative aspect as well as operational risk management. This appears to show a lack of understanding by the person you refer to from CHAS. This being said, for a pre-qual process, if CHAS were to ask specific CDM competence questions, it could be a good thing.

If 18001 is implemented incorrectly, and it can be and still certified by certain parties, yes it will miss things. Even if all the processes are in place, there may still be significant operational gaps.

A long answer to a sensible question.

I believe (some don't) that if implemented efficiently and correctly, 18001 and other systems can add value for certain businesses. However, I would be horrified if any client started to make 18001 compulsory.

Best wishes

Ian
