Over the last few years our way of life has witnessed a lot of changes, for example, lead free petrol, recycling, Eco friendly ways of living.
Most of these campaigns have had a champion, Swampy, Bob Geldof, Bob the Builder, bad back campaign, and so on.
I have been racking my brain, since the famous conkers debate, who do we have a H&S Champion.
I have found an unlikely Champion.
This person is; hard working, raising a family of 3 children, 1 boy and 2 girls, dog, cat, 2 cars and some times, due to financial troubles, has to hold down 2 jobs.
He works in a Nuclear Power Plant as a Safety Inspector, sector 7-G.
This person is known to millions as Homer J Simpson.
I would therefore like to propose to you dear reader, that the above mentioned become our H&S Champion.
What say you all? do I have a seconder?
Enjoy the rest of your day and thank you for your time.

Bob the Builder is one of the most unsafe animated builders I have to watch.
The way he hangs out of Lofty, Scoop and co is just irresponsible. He's obviously disabled the safety devices to be able to do that.

Hi Jonathon - good effort, but poor choice (IMHO)
Homer does not exist - what does that tell the world - that we as safety proffesionals are taking advice and guidance from TV writers?
That we are comedy acts?
What would a "conkers bonkers" journalist make of this thread?
Why do we not select someone that exists - and we can measure against?
We can measure our performance against the statements that David Cameron makes - some of his comments make sense, but some of his comments scare me.
To be honest, I am struggling to think of a name that we could use as a champion.
I would propose some of the experts that have done investigations into major incidents and changed rules and attitudes.
To me personally - there are a few champions on this forum that when they speak - I pay attention.
In no particular order, they are yourself Jonathon, CFT and Chris Packham.
Can the forum not name a person that can lead the industry - and the world??

This thread is a bit of tongue in check.
Based on the replies an idea that this might be able to cultivate this theme into a charity badge and the proceeds go to a worth children's charity.
As safety professionals we need to have a sense of humor, that is why Homer is the man.
I dont think the press would be intersted in this thread, wouldn't sell many papers.
Thanks for your input anyway.

Why bother with a fictional hero/champion? Occupational safety and health has surely had a real one, namely Lord Robens.
For example, while he was chairman of the National Coal Board he organised a weekend with compulsory attendance by the managers of the collieries with the worst safety records at the time. He wanted them to explain what had gone wrong in their pits and what was to be done to effectively reduce the toll of fatalities and injuries. I can't readily think of any other top people who have personally shown such an interest in improving the health and safety performance of their organisations. However, can anyone else think of any such people?
This is just one example of why I think Robens has been a notable hero/champion in our field. If anyone wants more information, have a look at the thread "Lord Robens - safety hero or villain?" of July 2007 at

From an IOSH perespective those with Distinguished Service are recognised by ( or were) the President's Distinguished Service Award.

Oh dear. The thought of this reminds me of badly made bank adverts of the manager and cashier with grey hair trying to 'attract new customers' with hip hop CD's. Respec' Bob!
I like homer at 6pm on channel 4 as light amusement, end of.
I don't see any accountants using the bash st boys as mathematical hero's!
Maybe the problem lies with too many analytical professors of the keyboard.
I'm off to buy a beano. xx

If it has to be a TV personality, I would rather it be a person (much as I love Homer).
Ever seen Ray Mears do anything even remotely unprepaired?

I'm concerned that we are talking about Bob the Builder hanging out of lofty. I thought I was on the wrong discussion pages.

As one of my hobbies I have the pleasure of working as an assistant instructor with a bushcraft school. The gent who runs it trained under Ray Mears - one of his big things is teaching skills the right way and the SAFE way, as he says knives and axes are essential tools but if you haven't got the habit of using them safely, then when you are cold, wet, hungry and tired they will bite back.
So why not Ray Mears? I second !

Bear Grhylls was caught and now has a rider saying that the programme is for 'entertainment' and outside assistance is used where required by H&S regulations.
Ray Mears does it for real and makes no bones that he has a camera crew with him - if you've watched some of his longer programmes you'll often see his film crew setting up thier own basha's. No going back to the local hostel.

What about the Green Cross Code Man, he was very tall and most people had to look up to him (didn't he play Darth Vader too?)

Indeed, David Prowse. Though he was a bit put out when he found out that his voice had been overdubbed by James Earl Jones.
