Posted By Ross Ward Can an excavator (assuming it has the correct thorough inspections) be used to raise and lower man riding equipment into and out of excavations/shafts etc? If so does the machine require any modifications?

Posted By Ian Futcher Graeme Perhaps this is the tender stage, and the guy is wondering if this is a reasonably practicable approach for his particular situation... Seems people are a bit jumpy today... Ian

Posted By alex mccreadie Ross they would have to be inspected 6 monthly for man riding duties. Excavators are a relatively new thing regarding using them (legally)as lifting equipment. If they are to lift over a ton they must have Load Indicators fitted. There are other points covered in LOLER if you can get hold of a copy (HSE BOOKS about£8.00) Ta Alex

Posted By Ross Ward Thanks all for your assistance. Graeme, This query was raised as a general query by a client, not relating to a specific project, but following research into lifting equipment inspection regimes. The issue was raised following a statement in the HSE Contract Research Report (429/2002)- Thorough Examination and Inspection of particular items of lifting equipment. It states on page 188 that "Excavators are not suitable for the lifting of persons". The question was thrown open for comment to their supply chain and I was hoping for some assistance from some more experienced practitioners.

Posted By Ron Hunter It is permitted "under exceptional circumstances" but not encouraged. L113 ACoP reference to Regulation 5(1) of LOLER 98 refers.

Posted By graeme12345 thanks 4 the update Ross, sorry if my post seemed balshy, I was concerned this was an ongoing operation that was being done without other serious hazards being controlled. (a 360 can probably reach down about 4 to 5 m's even without a attachment)
