I know that there are regs/guidance that says that items that have the potential to start or propogate the spread of fire have to be kept a certain distance from buildings, but I'm struggling to find these.
Could one of you helpful souls please let me know the relevent regs?

PL, I cannot give you a legal reference but your property insurers will certainly have a view which they may seek to impose on you as their requirement.

PL,
I’m not sure there is legislation or guidance on where skips or pallets are stored, it would be difficult to have a standard rule that could be applied to all premises given the diversity. It would obviously be prudent to store waste skips and pallets as far from your buildings as possible and to keep the storage of such material as low as possible, I am sure that these points would be identified in your fire risk assessment.
If there is legislation or guidance I would certainly be interested in it, as I know that it would present some issues that would need to be addressed within some areas of my organisation.

Our Insurance Advisers suggest 8 metres for bins, skips etc. - but then they would, wouldn't they?
This comes unstuck when you have major refurb going on, with scaffold chutes and skip below.
In that instance an enclosed skip should fit the bill.
In an everyday sense, we have a great number of properties where it is wholly impractical to comply with the 8 metre requirement. Some of our distances to boundaries are less than half of that. You need a hard wall with no openings and no overhangs at your best possible location.
