Can anybody with the relevant knowledge tell me whether a rope (seal) around the doors and the glass in the doors of a mid 1980s domestic wood burning stove is likely to be asbestos?
Sadly the manufacturer is no longer around and the question has now been raised.
Any assistance will be gratefully received.
Regards.

No real way of knowing without testing it, but on our wood burning stove we have to change the rope every 12 months or so as it gets old and falls off. So if the stove in question has been in use during the past 20 or so years I would guess that it is not even the original rope that is fixed to it and so if it has been replaced in recent years the chances are it is non-asbestos, it may therefore be worth speaking to the owners to see if the rope has been replaced in recent years.
I hope that this helps.

as SJA rightly says you cannot be certain without having the item tested. However asbestos was commonly used at this time for such items - if you look on the Asbestos essential section of the HSE web site there is an advice leaflet on these types of gaskets and rope seals
