Posted By DaveCole Good morning All This may seem an odd question, but does any body know of any legislation or documentation on people working in offices with no natural daylight?? There is a receptionist working 8 hours a day sitting at a desk for the majority of that, answering phones and looking at a computer screen. It's a New one on me. Any advise from those in the know would be gratefully received. Thanks as always Dave C

Posted By Richard Altoft Workplace Regs Reg 8 says in part 1 lighting shall be suitable and sufficient and in part 2 says lighting in part 1 shall so far as is reasonably practicable be by natural light. Hence in my opinion you MUST provide suitable and sufficient lighting for the exact task being undertaken but you are only obliged to go as far as is reasonably practicable (in all the circumstances) to do that using natural light such as day light etc. There is also guidance and ACOP material available in support of this. hope that helps R

Posted By Neil R There isn't any specific legislation for daylight. You'd be looking at lighting quality, brightness, clear light with no flickering etc. From a DSE point of view you should be looking at whether the user is straining the eyes, whether the lighting causes glare from the screen and whether the balance of the lighting is consistant with the light from the screen. If all these are ok then theres no problem.

Posted By Kevin Brown I think CIBSE LG3 was (maybe still is) the definitive guidance for office lighting where DSE work is undertaken. Typical lux values should be between 300 and 500, avoiding glare and excessive reflection. You have to consider that there'll be times of the day and year when natural daylight won't be making much of a contribution to the total level of illumination, so your artificial lighting will need to be capable of meeting the criteria on its own. Away from the DSE environment you need to provide 150 lux to reduce risk of trips, slips and falls.

Posted By Ian Futcher I've worked in an office for 5 years with no external windows. I'm attached to a manufacturing area where (for product security reasons) most of the areas have no external windows, and people have been working there for umpteen years. There is no legislative reason why you MUST have daylight in an office/work area. It's nice when you get it, but these days I don't expect it; it reminds me of a joke: Why don't Safety people look out the window in the morning? ...because they'd have nothing to do in the afternoon Ian
